Use casting devices to display a dashboard on a screen

Casting dashboards via Chromecast or Apple TV is only suitable for testing. For reliable display, use our recommended hardware setup.

Updated today

Casting your dashboard to a TV using Chromecast or Apple TV is a temporary solution only. It is suitable only for testing Geckoboard or for brief presentations, not for continuous dashboard display. We do not recommend using casting for the long-term display of your dashboards.

Why casting isn't reliable

Casting requires:

  • Your computer to stay on and connected

  • The browser tab to remain open

  • Your computer to not sleep or disconnect from Wi-Fi

  • Constant use of your computer's resources

These requirements make casting unsuitable for the always-on dashboard displays most teams need.

Chromecast setup (for temporary use)

  1. Create a share link for your Geckoboard dashboard and open it in a new browser window

  2. Mac: Click View in the menu bar, then Cast…
Windows: Click Chrome's menu and select Cast…

  3. In the Cast dialog select Cast tab, then click your Chromecast

Apple TV setup (for temporary use)

  1. Create a share link for your Geckoboard dashboard and open it in a new browser window.

  2. Click the AirPlay icon in your Mac's menu bar
(If missing, go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays, and check Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available.)

  3. Select your Apple TV (ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network).

  4. Enter the AirPlay passcode if prompted.

  5. Click the AirPlay icon again, select Use As Separate Display.

  6. Drag the browser window to your TV screen.

For reliable dashboard display use an external device
